Trying hard not to want...

Seeing as I've returned to being a student, and I'm rather interested in all things "Green" - I'm trying really hard not to want things. Its not really working. I seemingly want everything, but I'm getting better at not buying everything (I think its the immense cost of everything, not will power though). Abigail Percy was guest blogging on DesignSponge this week, and she had lots of wonderful things to show and tell. Particularly this...

This is the work of Akira Minagawa for his line Mina Perhonen. Very hard not to want every single piece!

The Cleanest Line

I need to start looking at this blog on a more regular basis. Done by Patagonia, it has all sorts of great info. And of course, the header is such a great illustration!

Thorncrown Chapel

I saw this in the book, The Green Imperative, which I am currently reading. Its absolutely gorgeous! By Fay Jones, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, its called the Thorncrown Chapel. It has the look of being woven. I will have to go for a visit some day, go inside, walk around it...

New Voltaic Bag

Its very exciting to finally see a solar bag that has enough juice to power a laptop. My question is, and I hate to say it, but.... does it have to be so ugly? Not just in shape, but do solar panels in general have to be so utterly unattractive. I'm not blaming Voltaic or anything, this is really cool... but ugly.

Can Style Save Us?

Found this new blog today. I'm uncertain if it will become part of my daily blog reading routine, but it looks really great, and I already found this new store to go and check out... excellent, a pretty Bulk Barn, now if only they had Sorgrum Flour.

Neighbourhood Satellites

Just found out from Maurin today about this great artist, Myriel Milicevic. She does some really interesting work in Interactive Design in regards to sustainability, but always in a playful manner. I'll have to look more into her work, but I wanted to make a note of her site here before I forgot, as I'm apt to do.

Bug Labs

Just want to keep a note of this site. Bug Labs - the lego of gadgets... should be interesting to see how this develops. Seems like we all want to build things again, and not just the old school stuff like clocks and stools from grade 7 Industrial Arts class. But everything. I like making stuff, I guess I'm not as alone as I thought I was.

Wonderful Mobile

I saw this wonderful mobile and loved it immediately. By Franz Straessle, I meandered across this on Little Circus, a wonderful blog I linked to from my dear Emeline's wonderful cochonet rouge. How wonderful to see the beautiful assemblage of carefully chosen little objects. Wouldn't this be a wonderful way to display someone's small objects from their childhood, a way to mirror the preciousness and playful nature of small objects of one's past. I do love mobiles.

I was shown this amazing animation today by the Blackheart Gang. Its called the Tale of How... Absolutely wonderful! Thanks Lena for the inspiration!

Changing the Change

Ohhhhh, I really want to go to this conference. Italy, in the summer, I'm sure I'll figure out a way to get there. via. treehugger.

Afternoon at the MMCA

Another exhibit that I checked out on this side of the ocean. I went with some very lovely friends to check out the Vik Muniz exhibit at the MMCA. It was pretty good, interesting, but definitely not the best thing I've seen in the last couple of months. I may have had too high of expectations for it, as it was highly recommended by a friend who really wanted to see it. Interesting, and I felt the Artistic BS on the wall was really good - I wanted to write some of it down so I could use it later... I can't decide if that's a good thing, or bad thing, not plagiarising or anything, just some 'inspiration' on how to write things that sound more intelligent than the actual piece. The other exhibit was by some other guy (I can't remember his name, and I don't want to remember, or write it down, in case he finds this and sends hate mail). It was HORRIBLE. It looked like a really pretentious project by a first year art star. Oh was it bad, full of books attached to chains, cardboard boxes, and crappy looking basketball hoops made from tinfoil, and I can't forget the buckets attached to all of the tables. Maybe they were there to vomit into after you saw the work. The vomit might have been an improvement.
